In what is being described as one of the most chilling and premeditated crimes of recent times, the honeymoon of an Indore couple turned into a sinister murder plot that has shocked the nation. Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife of the deceased Raja Raghuvanshi, has now confessed to orchestrating her husband’s gruesome murder in Meghalaya, citing her dissatisfaction with the marriage and an alleged affair as motives.
This confession, confirmed by police sources and reported by NDTV, comes weeks after Raja's brutal death during what was meant to be a romantic getaway in India’s scenic northeast.
The Murder That Shook Meghalaya
The case first came to light in May when the body of 30-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi was discovered in a gorge in Meghalaya. What initially seemed like an accident during a trek soon turned into a murder investigation, and all fingers began pointing toward his new wife, Sonam.
Raja and Sonam had been married just seven days before their ill-fated honeymoon. According to Raja’s family, it was Sonam who insisted on going to Meghalaya and had even booked a one-way ticket for the trip—raising suspicion in hindsight.
A Chilling Confession
According to police sources, Sonam confessed during interrogation that she planned the murder with her lover Raj Kushwaha, who was reportedly an employee at her father's business in Indore. Their relationship allegedly continued even after her marriage to Raja.
Just days after the wedding, Sonam and Raj reportedly hatched a plot to eliminate Raja so they could be together. The plan was both methodical and brutal.
The Hired Killers and the Final Act
Police say three hitmen—identified as Akash, Anand, and Vikash—were hired to carry out the murder. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) revealed that these men travelled from Indore to Shillong in phases, a tactic meant to avoid raising suspicion.
On May 23, while on a trek, a local guide spotted the group. He later told police that while Raja walked ahead with the three men, Sonam lagged behind. It was from this position, police allege, that she gave the command to kill.
The men then attacked Raja using sharp weapons, targeting his torso and head. After the fatal assault, they dragged his body and pushed it into a gorge to make it appear like an accident.
Following the crime, the trio took a taxi to Guwahati and eventually dispersed. The police, however, were quick to piece together their movements through call records and eyewitness accounts.
Who Are the Accused?
So far, five individuals have been arrested:
Sonam Raghuvanshi – The wife and alleged mastermind.
Raj Kushwaha – Her alleged lover and co-conspirator.
Akash, Anand, and Vikash – The three hired hitmen.
Raja’s family, however, suspects that more people could be involved, and the investigation is far from over.
A Family Betrayed
For Raja Raghuvanshi’s family, the loss is not only devastating but filled with betrayal. His brother, Vipul, told the media that the family had no idea about Sonam's relationship with Raj or her plans. They believed the honeymoon was a genuine effort to start a new life.
Now, they’re left grappling with the unimaginable truth that the bride planned her husband's murder during their honeymoon.
Society, Crime, and the Question of Trust
This case is more than just a murder—it raises difficult questions about trust, relationships, and modern crime. How could a newlywed wife so coldly plan the murder of her husband? What compels people to turn to violence as an escape from relationships they no longer want?
With social media already abuzz, many are comparing this case to true-crime thrillers, though the real-life consequences are far more tragic.
Final Thoughts
The Meghalaya honeymoon murder is a grim reminder of how betrayal and crime can exist behind even the most romantic facades. As the legal system proceeds with the investigation and trials, Raja’s family—and indeed, the entire nation—will be watching closely, hoping for justice in a case that is as shocking as it is heartbreaking.
