In a world that glorifies the hustle, celebrates marriage, and equates success with wealth accumulation, a man from China has chosen a radically different path—one that has stirred debate, admiration, and even skepticism across social media.

Min Hengcai, a 35-year-old former cab driver from Sichuan Province, has renounced materialism, debt, and societal expectations to live a solitary, self-sufficient life in a cave. And according to him, he has never been more content.

The Breaking Point: When Work Becomes Futile

Min once led a life many would consider stable. He drove for a ride-hailing company and earned around 10,000 yuan (approx. $1,400) per month. But the long 10-hour shifts and mounting debts sucked the meaning out of his daily grind. Like countless others caught in the debt-trap of modern capitalism, Min found himself questioning the purpose of his existence.

Eventually, he reached a breaking point. In 2021, he decided to abandon city life, give up on paying off his $42,000 debt, and pursue what he calls a “more honest way of living.”

His relatives sold off his remaining properties to settle his arrears. In return, Min exchanged his land with a local villager and gained access to a 50-square-metre cave, which he converted into a humble dwelling using his remaining $6,000 in savings.

Life Inside the Cave: A Day in the Life of Min Hengcai

Far from the noise of the city, Min now lives a disciplined, peaceful lifestyle. He wakes at 8 a.m., tends to his small plot of land, reads extensively, walks in nature, and retires by 10 p.m. His diet consists mostly of what he grows himself. He rarely needs to spend money and avoids modern luxuries entirely.

He has described his cave as a “black hole”—not as a place of darkness, but as a reminder of human insignificance in the vastness of the universe. In this sense, his cave has become both a physical refuge and a philosophical statement.

A Rejection of Marriage and Materialism

Min’s views extend beyond work. He sees marriage as a waste of time and money, arguing that the chances of finding true love are so minuscule that it's irrational to dedicate one's life to chasing it.

“Why would I want to work hard for something so rare?” he asks, with the rhetorical confidence of a man who has firmly rejected societal norms.

This bold rejection of conventional values has drawn both praise and criticism. Supporters see him as a modern-day sage, a minimalist philosopher who has escaped the Matrix. Detractors accuse him of hypocrisy for shunning modern life while still using social media to share his cave life—where he has now garnered over 40,000 followers.

The Digital Cave Dweller: Social Media and the Irony of Simplicity

In a curious twist, the man who left society behind still maintains a presence on the very platforms that define our digital age. Min uses social media to share insights from his lifestyle, post images of his daily routine, and reflect on existential topics. This has led some to accuse him of capitalizing on anti-capitalism.

Yet, his social media presence doesn’t seem driven by profit. It appears more like a personal journal—a window into a lifestyle most would never dare explore.

Reflections: A Personal Revolution or a Public Performance?

Min Hengcai’s story is both fascinating and deeply reflective of our times. It challenges us to ask uncomfortable questions:

  • Is the modern work-marriage-consume cycle truly the only path to fulfillment?

  • Can simplicity be revolutionary?

  • Is choosing solitude an act of cowardice or courage?

Min’s choice may not be for everyone. Most of us have responsibilities—families, obligations, dreams we want to chase within society. But his story serves as a powerful reminder that alternatives exist, even if they seem radical.

In a culture that often mistakes busyness for purpose and wealth for success, Min’s cave is more than just a dwelling—it’s a quiet rebellion.
