New Delhi — The national capital is baking under an intense heatwave, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for Delhi and surrounding areas as temperatures crossed 45.5°C in parts of the city. The scorching heat has pushed health and safety concerns to the forefront, triggering warnings for residents to remain indoors, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged sun exposure.

The red alert—IMD’s highest-level weather warning—signals "take action" conditions, with a very high likelihood of heat illnesses and heatstroke across all age groups. Vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health conditions are being advised to take extra precautions.

🔥 Temperature Peaks Across the City

According to IMD’s 2 PM bulletin on June 11:

  • Ayanagar recorded a sweltering 45.5°C, the highest in the region.

  • Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station, reported 43.8°C, also significantly above average.

  • Humidity hovered at 39%, intensifying the discomfort through hot, dry south-westerly winds.

With weather stations across Delhi-NCR reporting highs between 44°C and 46°C, daily life has slowed down dramatically. Streets are deserted in the afternoons, schools have limited outdoor activity, and healthcare centers are seeing a spike in heat-related cases.

🌡️ Widespread Heatwave Across North India

Dr. Naresh Kumar, a senior scientist at IMD, stated:

“Northwest India is currently experiencing severe heat. Over the next 3-4 days, heatwave conditions are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, as well as northern Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.”

The red alert extends to:

  • Delhi-NCR (June 11–12)

  • Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan (till June 14)

  • Other northern states under an orange alert, signifying potential risk

🌩️ Relief on the Horizon?

While the situation remains critical through June 12, some respite is expected from the night of June 13, when a western disturbance may bring light rainfall and thunderstorms. Gusty winds of up to 60 km/h are expected during this period, possibly cooling down the blistering heat.

From June 13, the red alert over Delhi will be downgraded to orange, and by June 14, temperatures are expected to dip slightly with partly cloudy skies and light to moderate showers.

🏙️ Delhi’s Air Quality Also Under Scrutiny

Adding to the city’s woes, air quality levels have dipped. The Air Quality Index (AQI) at 2 PM on June 11 was measured at 225, placing it in the “poor” category. The dust-laden winds ahead of the incoming storm system are expected to further impact visibility and respiratory comfort.

🛑 Public Advisory and Precautions

Authorities have issued the following urgent health guidelines:

  • Avoid stepping out during peak heat hours (12 PM–4 PM)

  • Hydrate regularly, even without thirst

  • Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothes

  • Keep cooling appliances functional and accessible

  • Watch out for symptoms of heat exhaustion such as dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps

Government offices, hospitals, and emergency services have been put on alert to respond to heat-related emergencies. Schools and workplaces have been advised to alter schedules or reduce outdoor exposure where possible.

🔍 What This Signals for the Future

Delhi’s recurring summer extremes are no longer rare occurrences—they're a predictable pattern, increasingly exacerbated by urbanization and climate change. The proliferation of concrete, lack of tree cover, and rising vehicle emissions are contributing to the creation of urban heat islands, where city temperatures remain much higher than surrounding rural areas.

This red alert should be a wake-up call not only for short-term health safety but also for long-term climate action.

✍️ Final Thoughts

As Delhi remains under a red alert, public cooperation is essential. Extreme heat is not just an inconvenience—it’s a serious public health issue. While partial relief is expected later this week, citizens are urged to remain vigilant, follow weather updates, and take every precaution necessary.
